Sager is a digital media advisor, growth expert, editorial consultant, editor, writer, and experienced journalist at publications including The Wall Street Journal, TIME, and The New York Sun. He is also the founder of Montague Street Media, which provides digital media and editorial consulting services to private clients looking to grow audiences, improve newsroom performance, and/or stand up scalable new editorial operations.
Previously, he was VP of Content at Ladders, where he built a news site covering the future of work, reaching a monthly audience of 6 million and driving millions of dollars in revenue through newsletter sponsorships.
Before that, he was the Editorial Director of TIME Ideas, where he grew traffic with newsmaking essays including Aziz Ansari’s “Everything You Thought You Knew About Love Is Wrong.” In print, he also oversaw cover essays including “Help! My Parents Are Millennials!,” Tyler Cowen’s “United States of Texas,” Robert D. Kaplan’s “Geopolitics and the New World Order,” Rod Dreher’s and Jonathan Rauch’s debate on the future of religious freedom in America, Rand Paul’s and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s responses to the 2014 Ferguson riots, and the magazine’s 2014 Ideas issue featuring Key & Peele.
Before that, at The Wall Street Journal, Sager developed and launched Review, the popular WSJ Weekend section devoted to books and ideas—home to essays including the Journal’s most-read story of 2011 on “Tiger Parenting,” 2012’s most-read story on French parenting, surgeon Marty Makary’s call to arms “How to Stop Hospitals From Killing Us,” Bill Gates’s “Plan To Fix the World’s Biggest Problems,” “Why Airport Security Is Broken—and How to Fix It,” written by the former administrator of the TSA, and Marc Andreessen’s “Why Software Is Eating the World.”
Sager also served as a member of the editorial board of the New York Post and as editorial features editor and chief editorial writer for the start-up New York Sun, where he was a member of the founding staff in 2002. His writing has also appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Reason, Politico, Smart Money, and The Atlantic Monthly.
Sager is author of The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians, and the Battle to Control the Republican Party (2006).
